Managing Freelance Content Providers

One of the most popular jobs you can outsource is content creation. But how do you know if the person you hire will produce high quality work? Before you contract someone, make sure you talk to them on the phone, share your goals for the project, ask about their experience working on similar projects and request samples of their work. Once you’ve secured a great content creator who “gets” you and can bring your vision to life, pays attention to details and meets deadlines, hold onto them!

Below are 5 tips to manage freelance content providers:

  1. Provide clear, detailed direction: Write a detailed summary of the project, set a deadline, and provide examples, if possible.

  2. Be open to suggestions: Listen closely to their advice and ask them if they have any suggestions to improve the overall content.

  3. Make yourself available for questions: Let them know the best way to reach you and return their calls as quickly as possible.

  4. Give feedback: Let them know if you’re happy with the final content, what you loved most and what was missing (if anything).

  5. Pay them well: If they’ve produced stellar work with little to no revisions needed, pay them well to show how much you value them.

I’ve been managing freelancers for more than 20 years, and whenever I’ve had the need to hire someone for a permanent position, I’ve always reached out to my top freelancer first because I know the quality of their work. I’m happy to say that I’ve built long-lasting relationships with freelance content providers, including writers, translators, editors, proofreaders, designers, and photographers. If you manage the relationship well, you’ll be rewarded with top-notch services.
